same age/grew up together tomarry soulmate au with tom being the soulmate theory obsessed one* (not because he's a hopeless romantic and longs for someone to love him unconditionally. just because it's interesting theoretically. stop calling him a romantic abraxas you will end up in the hospital wing!!) whose sole mission lately has become destroying potter's arguments about the irrelevance of soul bonds with facts and logic.

harry's parents ended up together and love eo despite not being each other's soulmates and it pisses him off how everyone is so obsessed with a concept he thinks is useless and needlessly vague.. and besides, he doesn't even get how it works – all the literature he's ever read on the topic talks about an inexplicable pull toward another person and the only person harry's ever felt inexplicably pulled towards is also the most annoying person in the entirety of hogwarts. no matter how many times harry promises himself that he'll ignore tom riddle from now on, he somehow always ends up in a fight with the guy the very next day... but surely the universe would never do something as fucked up as making tom riddle, the most annoying perfectionist sociopath, his soulmate? surely harry won't have to endure the shivers that accompany every one of riddle's always-cold touches (seriously, harry still kind of believes that theory about riddle being a vampire he and ron came up with in 2nd year) and that infuriatingly smug undertone harry swears riddle's voice always has (even if no one else but him hears it) whenever he corrects harry's answers for the rest of his life? right....? right???

later that year, while harry is still deep in denial, tom figures out the whole tomarry souldmates thing and now has to deal with being destined for the guy who's the most vocal hater of the idea of being destined for someone at all. cue harry freaking out and avoiding tom and trying to pretend like nothing has happened and tom, in true tom fashion, somehow only being encouraged by this and becoming even more obsessed with both harry and soulmate theory.
